Go Spurs Go!

Want a night of heart-racing entertainment, to watch some of the most talented basketball players in the world and to be surrounded by a mass of fun-loving, die-hard fans? There's only one place for that. The At&t center, home to the one and only San Antonio Spurs!

The San Antonio Spurs play in the At&t Center in San Antonio, Texas. Amazing basketball players and great citizens like Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli can all be seen at the At&t Center on game night. The city of San Antonio and The Spurs have a truly unique and wonderful relationship. The Spurs are one of the most loved teams, by their city, in the nation. It’s almost impossible to drive anywhere in San Antonio and not see a Spurs bumber sticker on at leat one car. In addition, going anywhere almost guarantees seeing a Spurs shirt or jersey being worn by somebody. Last year, when the Spurs made it to the play-offs there were banners all over the city, including one on the tower here at Trinity, with the “Go Spurs Go” saying.

The Spurs have a game this Saturday night at 7:30 against the Houston Rockets. Think that Spurs games are too expensive for you to attend? Think again! Trinity is selling tickets for only $10 to the game! Granted, they are nose bleeds, but the atmosphere at the game is electrifying no matter where you sit! So grab your Spurs shirt, get ready to have a great time, and I’ll see you at the game!!

Recreation and Relaxation

The city of San Antonio is home to many exciting and beautiful parks. City Parks can provide a college student with a varitey of activities and entertainment. Parks are a great place to go to do homework, have a picnic or get in some physical activity for the day. Some of my favorite parks are the Brackenridge Park, the Eisenhower Reservations, Hemisfair Park, Travis Park and the Alamo Plaza.

Hanging out in the different parks in San Antonio is also a great way to get to know the city. Whether you want to venture out far from Trinity, or stay pretty close, you’re sure to find a number of parks in every area of the city. Brackenridge park, which is just down the street from Trinity, is one of the most frequented parks in the city. With picnic tables, open grassy spaces, trails and a train, you could probably participate in any activity you can think of in Brackenridge park.
In the midst of downtown San Antonio is Hemisfair park. Hemisfair Park is home to so much history of San Antonio and beautiful art and architecture as well. Hemisfair Park hosts a lot fun and cultural activities, many of which are free!  The Tower of the Americas, one of San Antonio’s largest tourist attractions, is also located in Hemisfair park. One of the most attended events in Hemisfair Park is the World’s Fair. This event captures the heart and culture of many different countries around the world from April 6th to October 6th. Every year, over half a million people attend this event.
The parks of San Antonio are definitely a resource I would recommend taking advantage of. Going to the park on a beautiful afternoon is a great way to get some homework done in a beautiful environment. Also, going for a picnic on the weekend is a fun way to spend time with friends and get in some exercise by playing soccer or a game of capture the flag!

Movies by Moonlight

Funny Girl was the last movie of the "Movies by Moonlight" series for the summer of 2010.

Have you ever heard the expression "there's no such thing as a free lunch?" Well that may be true, but there is such a thing as a free movie… every week in downtown San Antonio! This year, every Thursday night in San Antonio from June 3, 2010 until September 30, 2010, a movie was played outside in Hemisfair Park. That means Trinity students have the opportunity to see four free movies at the beginning of the school year. This year, I went to see Funny Girl on the 30th. A large projection screen is set up on the side of a building and people take chairs, blankets and pillows to sit on the grass and watch the movie! Movie snacks such as popcorn, drinks and cotton candy are also available. The events begin at 7:30 with a different presentation each week. Then, the movie starts at 8:30. Free parking is available after 6:00 p.m. in the Durango Parking Lot across the street from the Federal Courthouse. Many college students have a hard time finding entertainment because of how expensive things are these days. This is a great way to go out, relax, enjoy San Antonio and get a break from homework without spending a lot of money!

Downtown San Anotnio: The Riverwalk and More!!

The Emily Morgan Hotel, located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, is one of the many wonderful architectural works that can be seen around downtown.

I’m sure you have heard of the “river walk” in downtown San Antonio. The majority of Trinity students have probably been there at least once. It is one of the most well known tourist attractions in San Antonio. The river walk is home to various restaurants, candy stores, souvenir shops and various venders and kiosks selling the many different cultural arts that are seen all around San Antonio. During move in days it is not uncommon to see college students and their families frequenting the many attractions at the river walk. What many new students do not know, is that there is a whole downtown life that coexists with the river walk. In addition to the river walk, there are historic residential neighborhoods downtown, beautiful hotels, great food, great jobs and great fun!
There are around 65 hotels in the downtown area including the historic Menger Hotel, the Emily Morgan Hotel and the Marriot Riverwalk hotel. The various hotels present downtown San Antonio with some of its proudest architecture.

Downtown San Antonio provides a unique and enjoyable shopping experience. With the combination of indoor malls, flea markets, sports stores, gift shops, boutiques and outdoor shops, shoppers will find almost anything they can think of in one concentrated area!
Working downtown would provide a Trinity student with numerable and invaluable opportunities. San Antonio has a variety of jobs available in restaurants, movie theaters, retail shops, offices and much more. Working downtown will provide good money and also an opportunity for students to get to know San Antonio natives and learn more about everyday San Antonio life.

In addition to staying, shopping and working in downtown San Antonio, it is also a great place to play! Art shows, plays and theatrical presentations, classic films and an exciting night life are normal occurrences in downtown San Antonio. A few popular bars and clubs downtown are Club Cohiba, Bonham Exchange, Coyote Ugly and TKO’s Round 2 Sports Bar. In addition many restaurants are open late on the river walk and contribute to the fun, energetic atmosphere.

Definitely one of the biggest raves in downtown San Antonio, and much of San Antonio for that matter, is the food. There are hundreds of amazing restaurants in downtown San Antonio. From barbeque to Greek food, downtown San Antonio literally has it all. One of the most common types of restaurants frequented in San Antonio, especially downtown, are the Tex-Mex establishments that combine the best Mexican foods with a little Texas twist. You probably will not be able to drive for more than a couple minutes in downtown without finding a delicious-looking restaurant!

I certainly hope every Trinity student gets a chance to explore and enjoy one of the greatest downtown areas in the country! If you are looking for more information on events, activities and/or general information on downtown, I would recommend checking out http://downtownsanantonio.org/!

Getting Off Campus

“Why Trinity?” is a question every Trinity student is bound to encounter countless times before actually coming to the university, while they are enrolled at Trinity, and probably even after graduation. Every student’s answer is a little bit different. For some it is the chance to continue playing a sport, for some it was simply on the common application and did not require an essay, for others, a great academic opportunity.

I am a sophomore here at Trinity and I am very pleased with my decision to come to Trinity. Almost all of my hopes and expectations have been fulfilled or exceeded so far. Some of the reasons I applied to Trinity were that it was on the common application and that it is in San Antonio. In my opinion, one of the greatest things about Trinity is its location... the great city of San Antonio.

Something that is often referenced when talking about Trinity is the “Trinity Bubble.” Last year, I heard a senior student say he had never been in San Antonio, outside of Trinity except for one late night study session at Ihop on Broadway, and the airport for trips to and from his home city. This is a prime example of the "Trinity Bubble." This student was able to live in a city for four years and never really go outside the boundaries of this school, in order to get to know the city he lived in.

I believe part of being a well-rounded person while in college is being a part of new things and having new experiences. We are so fortunate to go to school in San Antonio, Texas, where there is never a lack of things to see or do. All you have to do is look. In my blog, I want to provide information on the city of San Antonio, including things to do outside of Trinity, while attending school.

The Alamo is a popular tourist destination in the midst of downtown San Antonio.
